How To Prepare Yourself Mentally For College

Going to college for the first time can be daunting, there are lots of factors to consider, a whole new life is ahead of you and you need to prepare mentally for the changes that are about to occur in your life. It is certainly an exciting time but it can also be a nerve-racking and anxious time for a lot of people embarking on their new journey as full-time college students.

Here are a few tips to help you mentally prepare for your new college life.

Remember that You are Not the Only One

When you think of college as this scary place that is designed to intimidate you. Remember that you are not the only one. There are millions of college students just like you just about to embark on a whole new life. Embrace the fact that there are other people in the same boat as you and use this thought to comfort you.

It certainly won’t be easy but rest assured that everyone else is probably experiencing the same level of fear and anxiety as you.

Don’t Rush it

It can be quite tempting to rush through the process, but just remember that if you don’t want to go to college now, you can take a gap year if you wish. There is no law that states you have to go to college when all your peers are packing up to go.

Take your time and don’t rush, this is another valid tip to help you mentally prepare for college because taking a gap year might be just what you need to prepare for the next three to four years of study; new friends, new relationships, and much more.

For example, if you are trying to figure out how to get into Stanford, don’t rush it. Take your time, if you didn’t get the grades the first time around, you might need to take a few extra credits or retake your year to be prepared to apply for Stanford or any other college.

Record your feelings in a journal, if you don’t feel like writing, record your voice or make a video. Pour your feelings out on a page or whatever medium suits you best, just unleash the feelings. You will feel better afterward, even if you don’t feel anxious or scared, recording your feelings of happiness and excitement is still an effective way of preparing yourself mentally for college

Talk to your parents, your friends, or your therapist, just talk. Talking through your feelings is great for your mental health. In fact, it is a healthy way to deal with your emotions, so never underestimate the power of talking.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

Preparation is key, get all your things organized way ahead of time. Don’t wait until the last minute to start. Get it done as soon as possible, that way, you can take your time and get things done without rushing and causing unnecessary stress.
