As embarrassing as they can be for a lot of people, sex toys are not a one-size-fits-all kind of situation, both in the literal and figurative sense. What works for one person or one couple is not necessarily going to be an ideal choice for another.
There is nowhere this is more obvious than the humble dildo, perhaps one of the most well-known sex toys out there. While most people know what to expect when they hear the word “dildo,” the truth is that there are hundreds if not thousands of individual designs, as well as countless sizes to consider in all three dimensions.
But how do you choose a good dildo, especially if you are not really sure what to look for?
Size Comes First
There is no point obsessing over materials or shapes if you are not going to buy a dildo that you can actually use. If you already know your limits, stick to them – and if you do not, start small.
It is easy to overestimate what you can handle, and it can lead to a disappointing experience at best and serious injury at worst. Always “round down” to something smaller unless you are very much aware of your limits, especially if you have literally never used one before.
Materials Matter
If you are not familiar with the terminology, a dildo material refers to what the thing is made of. You will see acrylic, glass, jelly rubber, metal, silicone, and so on – some of these are meant for any user, while others (such as glass) are specifically something that only experienced users would buy.
Basically, you want to choose an option that you know you can handle safely. Glass and stainless steel are both surprisingly safe options and are easy to clean, but that does not mean that a first-timer should rush right into getting the fanciest one that they can find.
Consider The Shape
Most dildos are fairly simple in shape and usually look a lot like the real thing, but they can still vary quite heavily. Some offer extra nubs, ribs, or textures, while others may have an extra curve or twist to them.
Again, this mostly comes down to your own level of experience, but you also need to consider what you actually want. Do you want something that looks as realistic as possible or something that has an extra kick to it?
Keep in mind that some companies make dildos that are not even styled after human penises, such as alien designs. These are definitely for the more adventurous kind of user, but they should not be overlooked if that is something you would be interested in.
Choose What’s Comfortable
While sex toys can be quite an exhilarating experience, especially for someone new to using them, they are not going to feel amazing if you are not comfortable with the design.
Take your time when choosing a dildo, and do not force yourself to go for anything too extreme if you are not in the mood. Remember, comfort should always come first – fun is all part of the process, but it is not going to be any good if you can’t relax and enjoy it.
