Kiersten and Julien Saunders’ story spans nearly 10 years, from meeting at the company where they both worked to breaking up and making up, and beginning a career together in the very field that had ended their relationship in the first place—and that was only the beginning. The path to their current careers began with a blog in 2017, which transitioned into video content and their YouTube series Money on the Table
One of the first steps toward becoming financially secure is becoming financially literate, and finding communities—both digitally and in-person—can be an important element to doing so. Listening to and learning from other people allows you to realize what experiences are normal and what you should be concerned about. It also gives you a place to ask for advice when you need it, depending on the knowledge and experience of the group.
But you also have to put work into learning about finances yourself, and there are ample ways to do so. Kiersten recommends YouTube and books, but she also advises people to begin creating things themselves, once they have a baseline of knowledge to work off of. At that point, other people can comment on your work, and you can begin to ask more questions to get the help you need. It is equally important to develop your mindset—that is, to become aware of the things, both mental and in the world around you, that are dragging you down.
Kiersten, Julien and Brilliant Thoughts host Tristan Ahumada discuss the Saunders’ book, how to build an awareness of yourself and your financial situation, and the importance of making more money.
